Extras

Packing light, in five rules

  1. Pack for a week at most. Beyond seven days, a wash halfway is lighter than a second week of clothes.
  2. Choose one colour palette, so everything goes with everything and fewer pieces make more outfits.
  3. Wear the bulkiest things on the plane: boots, a coat, a sweater. Cabins are cold anyway.
  4. Roll soft clothes, fold stiff ones. Rolled T-shirts take less room and crease less; shirts and trousers do better folded.
  5. Keep a small bag of essentials in your carry-on: medication, a change of clothes, chargers and documents, in case your checked bag is late.

For long flights

Turn on “Long flight” to add what makes ten hours in a seat easier: a neck pillow, an eye mask, a warm layer, an empty bottle to fill after security, and something downloaded to watch or work on. Our guide to sleeping on a plane has more, and the jet lag calculator tells you when to sleep once you're on board.

Questions

How many clothes should I pack?

One set of underwear, socks and tops a day, up to about a week (five days if you're carry-on only), and plan a wash for anything longer. Bottoms and outer layers can be worn several times, so pack about one pair of trousers for every three days.

What are the liquid rules for carry-on bags?

At most airports, liquids, gels and creams in your hand luggage must be in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less, all fitting in one clear, resealable bag of about a litre. Some airports with newer scanners have relaxed this, but the rule at your return airport may differ, so packing to it is the safe choice.

Can I pack a power bank in checked luggage?

No. Airlines require spare lithium batteries, power banks included, to travel in the cabin, where a fire can be dealt with. Pack them in your carry-on.

Is my list saved?

Your ticks are saved in this browser, and the trip details are in the page's address, so you can bookmark it and pick up where you left off. Nothing is sent to us.
