Flight time calculator
Pick two airports to see roughly how long the flight takes, gate to gate, and what time it'll be where you land.
- Distance
- 5,540 km · 3,442 mi
- Time difference
- London is 5h ahead of New York
- lands 9:10 PM local
- How it adds up
- 30m taxi, climb and landing, then 6h 40m at 830 km/h
Focus for 7h 10m. In Flight, this trip is a focus timer: your plane leaves New York when you start and lands in London when the time is up.
Fly this routeHow the flight time is worked out
Airliners don't fly straight lines on a flat map. They follow the great circle, the shortest path over the curved Earth. The calculator measures that distance between the two airports, then adds it up the way timetables do:
- 30 minutes for taxiing, take-off, the climb, the descent and landing,
- the distance at 830 km/h (about 516 mph), a typical average for an airliner once it's up.
So New York to London, 5,540 km, comes to about 7h 10m, and London to Paris about 55m. Real timetables run 10 to 15 percent either side of these: the jet stream speeds up eastbound flights and slows westbound ones, airlines pad schedules at busy airports, and routes bend around weather and closed airspace.

Questions
How long is a flight from New York to London?
About 7h 10m by this estimate, for 5,540 km. In practice eastbound flights often take under 7 hours with the jet stream behind them, and westbound ones closer to 8.
Why does the same flight take longer in one direction?
Wind. At cruising altitude the jet stream blows from west to east, sometimes at over 300 km/h, so eastbound flights get a tailwind and westbound flights fly into a headwind. This calculator gives one figure for both directions, close to the average.
Is this flight time or block time?
Block time: from pushing back at the gate to parking at the gate, taxiing included. That's what airline timetables show. Time in the air, wheels up to wheels down, is usually 15 to 30 minutes shorter.
How accurate is the estimate?
Within 10 to 15 percent of scheduled times on most routes. Real flights vary with winds, the routing air traffic control gives them, and how busy the airports are, so check your airline's timetable before you plan a tight connection.
Does it include layovers?
No: it's the time for one nonstop flight between the two airports. For a trip with a connection, add up each leg and the time on the ground between them.
Which airports can I pick?
Any of 3,200+ airports with scheduled passenger flights. Search by city, airport name, country or three-letter code.
