How the converter works
Every city here comes with its time zone from the IANA database, the record of every country's clock changes that phones and computers use. When you enter a time, the converter finds the moment that time happens in the first city, then asks what the second city's clocks read at that same moment. That way daylight saving, half-hour offsets and the date line are all handled, rather than adding a fixed number of hours.
The table under the result lists the working day hour by hour, so you can see at a glance where a meeting or a call falls. Tap any hour to convert it.
Time zones of major cities
Offsets from UTC in January and July. Where the two differ, the city changes its clocks for summer.
| City | January | July | Zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | UTC−8 | UTC−7 | America/Los Angeles |
| New York | UTC−5 | UTC−4 | America/New York |
| São Paulo | UTC−3 | UTC−3 | America/Sao Paulo |
| London | UTC | UTC+1 | Europe/London |
| Paris | UTC+1 | UTC+2 | Europe/Paris |
| Dubai | UTC+4 | UTC+4 | Asia/Dubai |
| New Delhi | UTC+5:30 | UTC+5:30 | Asia/Kolkata |
| Kathmandu | UTC+5:45 | UTC+5:45 | Asia/Kathmandu |
| Singapore | UTC+8 | UTC+8 | Asia/Singapore |
| Tokyo | UTC+9 | UTC+9 | Asia/Tokyo |
| Sydney | UTC+11 | UTC+10 | Australia/Sydney |
| Auckland | UTC+13 | UTC+12 | Pacific/Auckland |
Abbreviations like EST and EDT change with the season, which is why the table uses UTC offsets.
Tips for working across time zones
- Say the time zone with the time, and give the city rather than an abbreviation: “3 PM London time” is clearer than “3 PM GMT”, which is wrong half the year.
- Watch the weeks around daylight saving. Europe and North America change on different Sundays in March and in October and November, so recurring meetings shift by an hour for a week or three.
- For more than two cities, use the meeting planner, which finds the hours that fall inside everyone's working day.
Questions
How do I convert a time to another time zone?
Pick the city the time is in, the city you want it in, and enter the time and date. The converter finds the instant that time happens in the first city and shows what the clocks say in the second, daylight saving included.
Why does the date matter?
Because of daylight saving. Countries change their clocks on different dates, and many never change them, so the gap between two cities can be an hour different in March than in January. London and New York are five hours apart most of the year, but four for a few weeks each spring and autumn.
What's the difference between GMT and UTC?
For everyday purposes, none: both are the time at 0° longitude, and UTC is the scientific standard clocks are set by. London uses GMT in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer, so 'London time' and 'GMT' are only the same half the year.
Why are some time zones 30 or 45 minutes off?
Countries choose their own offsets. India runs on UTC+5:30 as a compromise across its width, Nepal on UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia on half-hour offsets. The converter handles all of them.
Which cities can I pick?
Any city with one of the 3,200+ airports in our list: search by city, airport name, code or country. Each airport carries its IANA time zone, the same database your phone uses.
