The Flight app mark beside Flora: the cover of “Flight vs Flora: phone tree or flight at your desk?”

Flora is a free phone app in the same family as Forest: plant a seed, stay off your phone, and it grows into a tree; leave the app and it dies. Flight takes a different picture of progress, a plane flying a real route, and puts it in your browser. Flora wins on phone-blocking and friends; Flight wins when the work happens on a computer and the sessions are long.

Disclosure: Flight is our product, and this blog belongs to it. We've tried to be fair: what we say about Flora comes from its own site and app listings, checked in October 2026. Apps change, so check prices there before you decide.

Where Flora is stronger

On the phone, and with friends. Challenging friends to grow a tree together, with everyone seeing who killed theirs, is real accountability. Flora also has a simple to-do list with reminders, statistics by day, week and month, and an optional pledge to fund real trees through planting partners. And it's free to start.

Where Flight is stronger

  • Your computer. If you write, code, design or study on a laptop, a phone app can only guard the phone. Flight runs on the screen you're actually working on, in any browser.
  • No sign-in. Open the page and fly. Nothing to create, nothing to remember.
  • Sessions you choose by place, not number. “Fly to Rome” is a more inviting commitment than “two hours fifteen”, and the plane shows exactly how far you've come.
  • Sound to work to. A real airliner cabin, rain on a tent, waves: steady background that covers a noisy room.

A day with each

With Flora, you might start a challenge with two friends at 9 AM: everyone plants a seed, and if anyone picks up their phone, the group sees whose tree died. Your to-do list sits in the app, and the stats fill in through the day. It's social, playful and very good at keeping the phone down.

With Flight, the session happens on the laptop: you open a tab, choose a destination as long as the morning's work, and the cabin hum comes up as the plane leaves. There's no one to let down, which some people find calmer, and no tree to lose, just a city getting closer on the map.

Switching from Flora to Flight

  1. Keep Flora for phone-free challenges with friends, if they work for you.
  2. For solo desk work, open Flight and set your home airport so every session starts from the same place.
  3. To work with a friend, start the same route at the same time and land together.
  4. Put the phone in another room for the flight; Flight can't guard it the way Flora can.

Who should choose which

  • Flora if you want a free phone-blocker with a social side, and your work happens on the phone.
  • Flight if your work happens at a desk and you want long sessions with a sense of journey.

Working beside friends helps whichever you use; see body doubling. For background sound without an app, try our free rain sounds.

Try Flight

Questions

Is Flora free?

Yes, Flora is free to download on iPhone and Android, with optional in-app purchases. Its real-tree planting is an optional pledge you pay for.

What's the difference between Flora and Forest?

Both grow a virtual tree that dies if you leave the app. Flora is free to start and leans on friends and challenges; Forest has a long-running partnership to plant real trees with its in-app coins. Both are mainly phone apps.

Does Flight work without signing in?

Yes. Open Flight in your browser and start a flight; no account is needed.

Can Flight block my phone?

No. Flight is a web page, so it can't control other apps. Put your phone in another room or in a focus mode while you fly.
