Questions

How long is a nautical mile?

Exactly 1,852 meters, about 1.151 statute miles or 6,076 feet. It was fixed at that length by international agreement in 1929; the United States adopted it in 1954.

Why is a nautical mile longer than a mile?

Because it comes from the Earth, not from feet and furlongs: it was originally one minute of latitude, a sixtieth of a degree. That makes it handy for navigation, since 60 nautical miles is one degree of latitude on any chart.

How do I convert nautical miles to miles?

Multiply by 1.15078. To go the other way, from miles to nautical miles, multiply by 0.86898.

How do I convert nautical miles to kilometers?

Multiply by 1.852, exactly. A kilometer is 0.54 nautical miles.
